Background Checks for the Notary Public
Leon at NSA.info writes articles for notary signing agents. I agree with his thoughts about background checks:

I did a closing for a company last week. On the confirmation there were the letters 'BK' next to my name. I had seen this on a couple of other closing confirmations from them. I had to call them with a question I had about the closing I was doing, so I took the opportunity to ask them, what does this 'BK' stand for after my name? They told me, it means I passed their background screening which I had to undergo in order to continue working with them. It cost me nothing.

It's not the only background screening that I have submitted to. I paid to have one done through a large organization several weeks ago. They said, the whole purpose of it is to make things simpler. Pass this one background check, and many of the major title companies will accept it. You won't have to submit to multiple screenings. It isn't working out that way. Various companies are still requiring signing agents to submit to their own background screening.

I can't offer any advice. It's a call that every signing agent must make for themselves. Background checks are a requirement. There's no question about that. If this is what you do for a living, then you do what you have to do. You're either in or you're out.

One thing I would suggest is that you think twice about paying a company to do a background check. It can be done at no cost to you. A lot of companies are capitalizing on the need for background checks. The only one who should profit from them is you.

It's your business. Good luck.
