A Fresh Start
Author's Profile: Mary L. Baier, Mobile Notary in Jersey Shore, PA
I had a 31 year career in banking. It was becoming tedious and
boring. My whole life was affected to the point of deteriorating
health.
I retired in December and opened a tax preparation/Financial
Services Business. The first few months of 2007 were tax busy but
there were times I found myself wondering why I gave up the 9-5.
My sister was in the process of refinancing her home and had a mobile notary signer come to her home for the closing. She asked me why I didn't check into that for another aspect of my business.
I had dealt with loan documentation and been a notary for my entire banking career. That was the start and I have learned a realm of information from legal, technological, mailing process and billing.
I live in a rural part of Pennsylvania and all counties are large. I found that the notaries were few and far between. What I found the most rewarding were the people I have met and the places in my "backyard" that I would not have seen if I didn't take this plunge.
My husband has even enjoyed going on long trips with me. He said "who would have thought you would like this kind of work" and he wasn't kidding. The headaches of owning my own business and having to solve all the problems without deferring them to other departments is hard to get used to but I am becoming quite a multi-tasker. My terminology on cell phone issues, computer repair and printer problems has expanded. I have also found that the hours are great for me. I didn’t think I would become a collection agent. I am learning the difference between signing agents and title companies especially in the pay.
It is a big help to have these forums to refer to for problems. I felt like I was out in left field and couldn’t find a direct source for information. I saw numerous newcomers on the forums looking for a mentor to go on their first trip and I felt the same. It has been a hard first couple months and I'm far from being on a first name basis with any company but I enjoy it so far and still wonder how things work in the larger picture of destinations.
