10 reasons NOT to become a notary

While there is much truth in the following list, it was written for humor–I hope it doesn’t offend anyone.

Don’t become a notary if…

  1. You have zero contacts in the industry. Attempting to start “fresh” is one of the biggest mistakes new notaries make. Know where your work will be coming from before spending money on a class, test and supplies.
  2. You expect the work to fall into your lap. Gaining consistent work will most likely take more than simply adding your profile to an online notary directory. Directories are helpful but, don’t expect them to build a career for you.
  3. You think it’s an easy way to make money. I think the NNA perpetuates this myth when they advertise things like “the thriving real estate and refinancing markets have companies scrambling to hire Notary Signing Agents to help meet their increased business demands” (see the misleading statement here). When was the last time you witnessed a scramble? This is why #1 is so important.
  4. You just want to get out from under “the man”. Being your own boss is just a fallacy. Nora Spinks, president of Toronto-based Work-Life Harmony Enterprises says, “There is a fallacy that being self-employed and being your own boss is less stressful, when in fact it can be much more stressful. Instead of having one boss and a regular paycheque, you have a group of clients that you have to continuously keep happy.”
  5. You want a job with flexible hours. You’re the only one expected to be flexible. Consider another line of work if your schedule is open as often as a DMV window.
  6. You hate reading. That’s on par with saying you don’t like pens and stamps.
  7. You can’t pay attention to detail. You will not last long in this industry if you continually miss seemingly small and insignificant details. You must nitpick everything!
  8. You have a hard time signing your name in front of people. (see article)
  9. You hate using technology.
  10. You're a lying thief! (see article)
